NCAA Football Weekly Locks: Week 6
The stars finally aligned last week, as we came away with our first perfect weekend of the season, and fourth consecutive winning weekend to open the 2011 NCAA Football schedule. Alabama and Stanford both reminded us all why they are still among the elite programs in the nation with sizable victories against Florida and UCLA, respectively, while Clemson put together an impressive 23-3 victory of their own against a ranked Virginia Tech team, helping them move into the Top 10 for the first time this year.
Now we will look to keep our streak of perfection alive. Here are the picks that we believe will help us do that.
Game: #17 Florida @ #1 LSU
Pick: LSU -13
Reason: Prior to last weekend’s game, LSU had covered the spread in each of their games this season. They should have done the same against Kentucky last Saturday, but a meaningless late touchdown by the Wildcats would put them just short of the 29.5-point spread. LSU’s has one of the nation’s best defenses, as they are allowing only nine points against per game (despite playing some remarkable offenses already this season). That is not good news for Charlie Weiss and the Florida offense, who will be starting freshman quarterback Jeff Driskel after John Brantley was injured during last week’s game against Alabama. Look for LSU to shut down Florida’s rushing attack – which struggled against Alabama’s defense last week – as they come away with the win and the cover in Baton Rouge.
Game: #15 Auburn @ #10 Arkansas
Pick: Over 63.5
Reason: Each of the past three games between these two teams have gone over the total, and each of Arkansas’ last three games this season have gone over as well. Razorbacks quarterback Tyler Wilson has led a potent passing attack that is putting up an average of 351 yards per game through the air and an impressive 39.4 points per game. As for Auburn, they have allowed an average of 27.4 points against per game, and that number should only get worse as they have yet to face an offense that can put up points like Arkansas. Look for both teams to put up over 30 points as this game goes over the total.
Game: Miami @ #21 Virginia Tech
Pick: Virginia Tech -7
Reason: Virginia Tech will be looking to bounce back from their disappointing performance last week, as they try to avoid losing back-to-back games at Lane Stadium. The Hokies have covered the spread in each of the last five meetings between these two teams, as well as nine of the last ten. They are also 4-1 ATS this season, while the Hurricanes are only 2-2 ATS. Look for Virginia Tech to give the home crowd something to cheer about as they make up for last weekend’s loss with a win over Miami.
Last Week’s Record: (3-0), 2011 Record: (9-3)
