This Day In Sports History (December 1st) – Latrell Spreewell
It was on this day in 1997 that Golden State Warriors guard Latrell Spreewell attacked his head coach, P.J. Carlesimo. The incident took place at a Warriors practice, with Spreewell dragging Carlesimo to the floor and choking him before his teammates intervened.
Coach Carlesimo yelled at Spreewell, telling him to make crisper passes, to which Latrell responded by saying he was not in the mood for criticism. When Carlesimo approached, Spreewell threatened to kill him and the choking ensued. After being dragged away by his teammates, Spreewell returned a short while later and proceeded to punch his coach before being dragged away again.
The following day the Warriors organization decided to void Spreewell’s contract, which had three years and close to $24 million remaining. The NBA also suspended him for one year. After taking the case to arbitration, the contract voiding was overturned and the suspension was shortened to the remainder of the season (68 games).
Here is Spreewell at the 1995 NBA All Star Game.
