Dion Phaneuf Delivers A Devastating Check On Mike Sauer (Video)
Many NHLers will probably tell you that Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Dion Phaneuf is one of the hardest hitters in the game. After being on the receiving end of one of Phaneuf’s monstrous checks, I’m almost certain that Mike Sauer would agree.
With time running out in the third period of last night’s game between the Leafs and the New York Rangers, Phaneuf gave the puck away in his own end, but he made up for it by running over Sauer and forcing him to turn it over.
The hit, which knocked Sauer’s helmet off his head and left him on the ice in a daze for a few seconds, was as clean as they get, as Phaneuf made a point to keep his elbow down and drive his shoulder into the chest of his opponent. It was just like his dad probably taught him during his minor hockey days. And speaking of Dion’s dad, he was there to witness it first hand, as the fathers of the Leaf players were in attendance to take in last night’s game at Madison Square Gardens.
Here is a look at what they witnessed with just under five minutes remaining in the third period.
