Stat Line Of The Night — 12/26/11 — Drew Brees (w/ Video of Record-Breaking Pass)
With four minutes remaining in last night’s game between the New Orleans Saints and the Atlanta Falcons, Drew Brees had already recorded 274 passing yards and three touchdowns. Those numbers would certainly earn him some consideration for “Stat Line of the Night” honors, but it was his performance during those final minutes that would help him enter the NFL record books.
When the Falcons turned the ball over to the Saints at their own 33-yard line with just over four minutes remaining in the game, Brees needed just 30 more yards to break Dan Marino’s record for single-season passing yards. He would get 32 yards during that final drive, as completions of 12 and 11 yards to Marques Colston and Devery Henderson, respectively, would help set up a 9-yard record-breaking touchdown pass to Darren Sproles.
That final pass gave Brees 5,087 passing yards on the season, which is three more than Marino’s 5.084 from the 1984 season. And in addition to entering the record books, Brees’ performance from last night also earns him “The Stat Line of the Night” for Monday, December 26, 2011.
Here is a clip of Brees’ touchdown pass that gave him the record for most passing yards in a single season. Talking about breaking the record in style!
