74 Killed In Egyptian Soccer Riot (Video)
At least 74 people were killed and 248 more were injured during a riot following an Egyptian soccer match between Al-Ahly and Al-Masry in Port Said. After Al-Masry earned the surprising 3-1 upset victory at home over the Cairo-based Al-Ahly club, their fans proceeded to storm the pitch and attack the Al-Ahly players before eventually focusing their attention on the Al-Ahly supporters who had made the trip to Port Said to watch the game.
Reports indicate that among the deceased are security officials and fans who had either fallen from their seats or were trampled on during the melee. Some witnesses claim that they heard gunshots being fired in the stadium, while others have said that police and security did not prevent fans from bringing knives into the stadium
While some have pointed to the social unrest throughout the country as the cause of the riot, the more likely explanation points to the heated rivalry that has developed between Al-Ahly and Al-Masry over the years.
Sadly, this wasn’t the only incident of violence at an Egyptian soccer game today, as fans in Cairo who were preparing to watch Al-Ismaili and Zamalek set fire to the bleachers after hearing that their match was being cancelled due to the incident that unfolded in Port Said.
