Stat Line Of The Night — 4/16/12 — Matt Wieters
Prior to the start of the 2012 MLB season, most experts believed that the race in the AL East would be an interesting one between the New York Yankees, the Boston Red Sox, the Tampa Bay Rays and even the Toronto Blue Jays. No one really cared to mention the Baltimore Orioles in that mix, but lo and behold, they now find themselves alone on top of the AL East following yesterday’s victory over the Chicago White Sox.
After being swept by the Yankees, the Orioles have bounced back to win three of their last four games. Last night it was catcher Matt Wieters leading the way for Baltimore, as he went 3-for-4 at the dish with two home runs, five RBIs and two walks. After recording a solo home run in the eighth inning to put the Orioles ahead by a score of 4-2, Wieters would be required to work some overtime, as the Sox were able to score two runs of their own and send the game into extra innings. But with the bases loaded in the 11th, Wieters would go yard once again, as his grand slam sealed the 10-4 extra innings victory for the Orioles.
That impressive night by Wieters lifted his batting average and slugging percentage to .344 and .750, respectively, while earning him “The Stat Line of the Night” for Monday, April 16, 2012.
