Stat Line Of The Night – 5/10/12 – C.C. Sabathia

Going into Thursday night, the New York Yankees were 16-14, one game behind the Toronto Blue Jays.  The Yankees sent their ace C.C. Sabathia to the mound to face off against the Tampa Bay Rays’ ace David Price, who had won his last four consecutive starts.  The Yankees were looking for a strong start from Sabathia, and that is just what they got.  Over his last four starts, the Yankees’  ace had collected four wins, just like Price.  The stage was set for what appeared to be a fantastic pitching duel.

Unfortunately, both teams’ defenses faltered early and Thursday night’s game was wrought with errors, as the Yankees committed two in the first two innings, while the Rays committed an error in the bottom of the second.  Both teams surrendered two runs in the first two innings, but Sabathia managed to outperform Price throughout the rest of the game, as the Yankees eventually won 5-3.  Sabathia finished the game with 8 innings pitched, 10 strikeouts, and only a single walk.  Sabathia’s strong performance led the Yankees to a win, helping them to close the gap on the first place Rays.

Sabathia’s strong performance against the Tampa Bay Rays – one of the most dominant teams in the MLB right now – was just what the Yankees needed to help them to close the gap between first and fourth, and it moves the Yankees’ ace to an impressive 5-0 on the season.  C.C. Sabathia’s 8 inning, 10 strikeout performance against one of the best teams in baseball earns him “The State Line of the Night” for Thursday, May 10, 2012.
