Mesut Özil Had A Rough Day At Euro 2012 On Sunday (GIF)
Mesut Özil is one of the best soccer players in the world right now, making Germany one of the favorites to win the 2012 Euro. But you know, even the best players in the world have bad days every now and then. And as we witnessed yesterday, Özil certainly isn’t an exception to this rule.
On Sunday, Germany defeated Denmark 2-1, wrapping up the group stage with a perfect 3-0 record, earning them a spot in the quarterfinals, along with Portugal (who defeated the Netherlands). However, while the outcome was exactly as they’d hoped, their best player (well, arguably their best player) didn’t look so smooth out on the pitch.
Instead of making headlines with his characteristically sharp, defense-shredding passes, poor Mesut Özil had this kind of game:
The Germans were still tied with the Danes ten minutes into the second half when Özil got the ball at the top of the box. At that point, I’m sure every German fan was on the edge of their seat, screaming “gehen! gehen! gehen!” (which translates into “go! go! go!”). But for some reason, Özil hits the breaks and takes a spill.
The funniest part of the whole thing, though, is the reaction of the Danish players. They’re so caught off guard by this rare occasion in which Özil looks like an idiot, that is actually takes them a moment to figure out what to do following the embarrassing fall.
Don’t feel too bad for Özil, though. I’m sure his lovely girlfriend was there to console him when he got back to his hotel following the match.
