English Soccer Fan Tries The Old “Dong Distraction Trick” At Euro, Comes Up Short (Pic)
Fans can do a lot to give their team an edge. That’s why home field advantage is so important in pretty much every pro sport there is.
Of course, most of the time, this just means cheering really, really loudly. But in some sports, fans can get right into the opponents’ faces and try to distract them.
The most notable example of this is the basketball free-throw distraction. If you’ve ever watched an NBA or college game, then you know home fans love to go bonkers trying to distract the other guys while they’re on the line.
Soccer doesn’t usually provide an opportunity for this kind of distraction. Most of the time, home fans have to be content with showering the opposing players with streamers while they attempt a corner kick.
However, if it’s a really important match (say, a knockout game at the European Football Championships), and if the match should end in a draw, then all of a sudden fans right behind the goals are provided a rare opportunity to get in the opposing players’ heads during penalty kicks.
On Sunday in the Ukraine, during the quarterfinal match between Englnd and Italy, there was such an opportunity, as the game ended in a 0-0 draw and had to be decided in penalty kicks. And one uncompromising England fan was not going to miss his chance to alter the course of soccer history.
Thus, as Italy’s Alessandro Diamanti stepped up to the line, this England fan decided to give him the full monty, pulling down his pants and letting the Italian get a good look at his wang while awaiting the referee’s whistle.
Unfortunately, this gallant effort was all for naught. Diamanti put the ball into the back of the net, and Italy, not England, advanced to the semifinals of Euro 2012.
