Heavyweight Champ Vitali Klitschko Sprayed With Teargas In Kiev Demonstration (Pics & Video)
WBC Heavyweight Champion Vitali Klitschko successfully defended his title against Britain’s Dereck Chisora back in February, and just three days ago it was announced that he’ll face Manuel Charr on September 8th in Moscow.
However, the promoters of that upcoming fight are holding their collective breath after the 41-year-old Ukrainian prizefighter suffered a gash to his arm and teargas to his eyes yesterday in Kiev.
So how does a heavyweight boxing champ end up getting sprayed with tear gas by riot police?
Well, Klitschko is not just any heavyweight boxing champ. The guy is also a politician with a Ph.D. in sports science from Kiev University. In 2006 he ran for Mayor of Kiev, coming in second (ahead of the incumbent) and running on an anti-corruption campaign. Since then, when not beating the snot out of people, Klitschko has served as the “People’s Deputy” on the Kiev City Council and has founded his own political party.
That’s why they call the guy Dr. Ironfist.
Anyway, yesterday the Ukranian Parliament announced their controversial decision to make Russian the country’s official language in schools and local government instead of Ukrainian. And Dr. Ironfist, being among the political figures opposed to this decision, showed up in front of a government building with thousands of other protestors to voice his displeasure with the decision.
When things heated up, the cops busted out the batons and teargas—and that, of course, is how Vitali Klitschko got teargas in his eyes.
Here’s some footage of the incident, which was captured on a cell phone:
