Stat Line Of The Night — 8/15/12 — Felix Hernandez (Perfect Game Video)
Twenty-seven up. Twenty-seven down.
That is exactly how you would sum up Felix Hernandez’s performance on the mound yesterday afternoon, as he became just the 23rd player in Major League history – and the 21 in the modern era – to throw a perfect game.
Perfect games are supposed to be hard to come by, but that hasn’t been the case this season, as Hernandez was the third Major League pitcher to accomplish the feat in 2012 (Philip Humber of the White Sox and Matt Cain of the Giants are the others). King Felix’s comes against the Tampa Bay Rays, as he threw 113 pitches and struck out 12 batters during the Mariners’ 1-0 victory.
That performance not only puts Hernandez’s name in the record books, but it also lowers his ERA to 2.60, while improving his record to 11-5 on the season. His perfect game was the first in Seattle Mariners’ history, and it earns him “The Stat Line of the Night” for Wednesday, August 15, 2012.
Here is a look at Hernandez closing out his perfect game.
