A’s Pitcher Brandon McCarthy Takes Line Drive To The Head (Video)
There was a terrifying incident during the A’s-Angeles game yesterday in Oakland.
Oakland ace Brandon McCarthy was pitching to the Angels’ Erick Aybar with one out and nobody on in the top of the fourth when Aybar scorched a line drive right back up the middle that hit McCarthy in the head. The ball caromed off McCarthy’s noggin and over to third baseman Josh Donaldson, who fielded it and threw to first for the out.
As you would expect, McCarthy crumpled to the ground at first, but by the time the play was over and the Oakland training staff made it out to the mound, he was already sitting up and rubbing his head—probably wondering why all those singing bird were fluttering around him.
Luckily, after sitting on the mound for a few minutes, McCarthy was able to stand up and walk off the field on his own power. However, he was taken to the hospital for a CT scan, and he ended up spending the night so that doctors could observe him as a precaution.
Take a look at the chilling video:
Hopefully McCarthy will make a full recovery and rejoin the upstart A’s for the stretch drive. Though if he does, he’ll surely consider himself to be one lucky SOB. After all, that was a pretty close call.
