When it comes to fashion sense, NFL players certainly have come a long way. After all, it wasn’t that long ago that every football player wore those goofy oversized suits with five buttons that came right up under the chin. In fact, those things were just one more button away from being pajamas. But these days players are more worldly. They hire stylists, and they read GQ. In fact, some of them are inGQ. So you might say that NFL players have surpassed NBA players as the most fashionable pro athletes in North America, though it’s probably debatable.
In any case, the point is that, in addition to providing manly entertainment week in and week out, today’s football players now provide an additional service to males all across the football-loving world: fashion tips. And let’s face it, most of us track-pants-wearing types need some fashion tips. So on that note, why don’t we take a look at the 15 best-dressed players in the NFL today and see if we can’t pick up a few pointers, okay?
I'd never really thought of the Ravens' future hall-of-famer as a particularly fashion-forward guy. But apparently, in a survey of fellow NFL players a few years back, he was voted as the 4th most fashionable player in the league. So I did a little digging and, sure enough, the big man has a very distinctive style. Obviously, I didn't think it was worthy of the top 5, but Lewis definitely made the list. I mean, just look at him—in that coat he's like the Don Cherry of the NFL.
15. Ray Lewis
Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Thomas Howard rocks the preppy look, with that loose windsor knot, the unbuttoned collar, and, of course, the jeans. It's an unconventional look for a football player (or it used to be), so I give him full credit for pushing the boundaries. However, is it just me, or does his head look too big for his body in this photo?
14. Thomas Howard
Terrell Owens is currently an NFL player without a team...just like he was last year. But he was on the Seahawks preseason roster for a while, and I assume his agent is still shopping the former All-Pro around. So for now, we'll still consider him an NFL player.
As for his fashion sense, it's always been pretty sharp. However, it's not for beginners. Don't take cues from T.O. unless you know what you're doing.
13. Terrell Owens
Eagles All-Pro cornerback Nnamdi Aomugha (I wish I had been watching the first time John Madden tried to pronounce his name) likes to stick with the classic styles. And as you can see, he really pulls it off. This is definitely a look any man can try to imitate.
12. Nnamdi Aomugha
Assuming they are each holding their own bobble head, that's Ronde on the right and Tiki on the left. Either way, together they are the best-dressed identical twins in the NFL. Of course, Tiki probably picked up some fashion tips from stylists and wardrobe people at NBC, where he's worked as a correspondent for the Today show. (However, last year Tiki filed papers with the NFL to come out of retirement. So, technically, he's a free agent.)
11. Ronde & Tiki Barber
Shaun Rogers proves once and for all that the NFL's larger gentlemen (he's 6'4"/350lb) don't have to wear baggy, oversized suits. Unfortunately, his common sense isn't as sharp as his fashion sense. In 2010 he was arrested at the Cleveland airport for carrying a loaded handgun in his carry on luggage.
Yeah, you have to place your laptop in one of those plastic bins, and God help you if you have more than 100mL of toothpaste, but I'm sure your loaded firearm should be totally fine.

Like Terrell Owens, Chad Johnson also finds himself unemployed these days. However, he probably would be on the Dolphins right now if not for that whole "wife accusing him of head-butting her" situation. In any case, whether or not he abused his wife (we'll give him the "innocent until proven guilty" treatment here), you have to admit he's a sharp-dressed man.
9. Chad "Ochocinco" Johnson
I definitely did not expect Eli Manning to make the list. I mean, he's got that "awe shucks" vibe and that subtle Southern drawl. But man, does this guy('s hot wife) know how to pick a suit or what? I'd say this is a good look to imitate, but you probably can't afford it. I know I can't.
8. Eli Manning
Just one slot ahead of Eli Manning is New York's other quarterback, Mark Sanchez. Here he looks like he stepped right out of the pages of GQ.
Of course, Mark's backup (you know, Tim Tebow?) is also a pretty sharp dresser, but he won't make this list until he ditches that stupid chin-strap facial hair.
7. Mark Sanchez
Lions receiver Nate Burleson has a very distinctive style. Where does he get it? From Canada, probably. He was born in Alberta while his father was playing for the Calgary Stampeder of the CFL, and he spent most of his childhood in Seattle, which is just south of the border.
6. Nate Burleson
The Rams' all-time rushing leader—seriously, he's got more yards than Marshal Falk or Eric Dickerson—is a pretty stylish dude. He apparently travels to Paris and Milan in the offseason to attend fashion shows, and on his personal website he's got a section dedicated to fashion—thought it's currently incomplete. As you can see here, Jackson certainly isn't afraid of bold materials.
5. Steven Jackson
Tom Brady is married to a supermodel, so he is actually legally required to be fashionable. A few years ago I might have put him at the top of the list, but a new crop of fashionable stars has risen. Also, he started endorsing UGGs, which is just kind of silly. (Though I have to admit, fur-lined boots would probably be pretty nice while sitting on the sidelines in Foxborough in January.)
4. Tom Brady
Ignore the fact that Seattle receiver Braylon Edwards looks like he wants to physically harm you in this photo, and just look at his awesome attire. Grey pants and black satiny jacket? Yep, this guy has style. He's like a young Hugh Hefner.
3. Braylon Edwards
Prediction: Cam Newton will one day be considered the best-dressed player in the NFL. Especially if he keeps doing spreads for GQ. (We would all be well-dressed if the folks at GQ supplied our wardrobe.)
2. Cam Newton
That NFL players pole I mentioned earlier said that Cardinals superstar Larry Fitzgerald was the best-dressed player in the NFL, and I agree.
Actually, so does Larry. When one reporter asked him who the best-dressed player in the league was, he said "me." But hey, it aint braggin if it's true, right?
