Brazilian Soccer Club’s Trainer Runs Onto Field To Thwart Scoring Opportunity (Video)
Well here’s something you don’t see every day: a last-minute goal scoring opportunity thwarted…by the defending team’s trainer.
The bizarre incident occurred during a recent low-level Brazilian soccer game. Ponta Pora had a slim 1-0 lead over rival club Coxim with time running out. However, one Coxim player was able to get the ball deep into Ponta Pora territory, make a few slick moves to elude the defenders, and get an opportunity for a clean shot at goal from point blank range.
However, Rafael Gomes, Ponta Pora’s medic, was nearby attending to an injured player. And apparently he decided that he wasn’t just going to stand on the sidelines and watch the opponent tie the game. So he ran out onto the pitch and kicked the ball away, ending the threat.
Take a look:
Usually field invaders are overexcited (and overserved) fans, not team medical staff. But hey, I guess there’s a first time for everything.
Of course, they say cheaters never win, but in this case they did. The referee didn’t know what to do, so he did nothing. Thus the game ended 1-0, and Ponta Pora got the W.
Next stop for this ref: the NFL.
