Carolina Newspaper Cartoon Mocks Cam Newton (Pic)
During his rookie season, Cam Newton threw for 4,051 yards, rushed for another 706 yards, and totaled 35 touchdowns. As a result of those impressive stats, the highest of expectations were placed on Newton heading into his sophomore season, and he has struggled mightily to live up to them, recording just four total touchdowns in the Carolina Panthers’ first three games, while turning the ball over a total of six times.
That slow start has his team out to a disappointing 1-2 start, and it appears as though at least one newspaper in Carolina is already growing impatient with the questionable attitude of the 2011 first-overall pick.
That “questionable attitude” we speak of was on display during the Panther’s week three drubbing at the hands of the New York Giants, as Newton emphatically celebrated a touchdown with his team trailing 23-0 in the third quarter, and was later seen sulking on the bench following his third interception of the game—an act that received criticism from Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith.
In response to those actions, The Charlotte Observer published the following cartoon in today’s paper, which depicts Newton revealing a Hello Kitty t-shirt while performing his Superman touchdown celebration:
Perhaps Newton could have handled himself better while facing adversity, but is this really any way to treat your team’s quarterback of the future? Heck, if the city or Carolina doesn’t want him, I could name at least 10 other NFL cities that would gladly take him off their hands.
