Justin Verlander Rubbed The Detroit Trainer’s Bald Head For Good Luck (Video)
When he’s on the field, Justin Verlander seems to have ice-water in his veins. On Tuesday night in Detroit, the Tigers’ ace pitched another gem of a game, going 8 1/3 innings while giving up just three hits, one earned run, and no walks, leaving the game in the ninth with a 2-1 lead.
However, once he’s off the field, it’s a different story. For the final two outs of the game last night, Verlander was a bundle of nerves.
How do we know this? Because the whole time he sat next to Tigers trainer Doug Teter, rubbing his bald head for good luck.
Check it out:
Yeah, it’s kind of weird, but last year Verlander won the American League Cy Young and MVP awards. So I say we let the man rub whatever he wants.
Besides, it’s not like Verlander is the first ballplayer to do weird stuff in an attempt to find some good luck. Just last week we saw the Baltimore Orioles doing all kinds of things in an attempt to find some mojo during Game 4 of the ALDS against the Yankees. Plus there are legends like Wade Boggs, who ate chicken every singe day before a game, and Turk Wendell, who would brush his teeth between every single inning he pitched.
So, really, Verlander is simply a part of the seemingly never ending trend of superstitions in baseball.
