Stat Line Of The Night — 11/19/12 — Aldon Smith
Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler was forced to sit out last night’s game against the San Francisco 49ers with a concussion, and after watching the performance put on by 49ers’ linebacker Aldon Smith, he probably couldn’t have been happier to be given the night off.
Smith was a regular visitor in the Bears’ backfield last night, and he’ll probably be making a few more appearances in Jason Campbell’s nightmares over the course of the next week following what may very well be the best performance of his young football career, as the 2011 first-round pick out of Missouri set a Monday Night Football recorded with 5.5 sacks on the evening. He also added seven tackles, four of which went for a loss, and forced two fumbles during the 49ers’ dominating 32-7 victory.
Smith’s 5.5 sacks against the Bears give him a league-leading 15 on the season. And his 28.5 sacks in his first 26 career games is the most over that span to begin a career since the sack was first recognized as a stat back in 1982. The 49ers certainly have something special in Aldon Smith, and we were reminded of that last night, as he earns “The Stat Line of the Night” for Monday, November 19, 2012.
