Manchester City Fans Threw Coins at Man U’s Rio Ferdinand (Video)
The Manchester Derby between Manchester United and Manchester City has been around since 1881, but the rivalry has never been more fierce. Last year the two EPL clubs duked it out all season long for the League Championship, and even then it still came down to the final day of the season with City staging a thrilling comeback to win their game, and the championship.
So you expected things to be a little rowdy on Sunday when the two clubs squared off for the first time this season. However, even for English soccer, this one got a little ridiculous.
You see, after Robin van Persie scored off a free kick in injury time to give United the 3-2 victory, the City fans went a little nuts. First, somebody threw a coin that hit United’s Rio Ferdinand right next to the eye and opened up a nasty gash. It goes without saying that, if the coin had actually struck Ferdinand’s eye, this could have ended in tragedy.
Here’s a video of the incident:
Well, that wasn’t the only post-match incident. Apparently some other City fans also tried to rush the field and attack United players before being restrained, and United coach Sir Alex Ferguson got into a shouting match with his former Man U player, Carlos Teves.
So yeah, things were a little nuts. Keep that in mind the next time some sportswriter in the Northeastern United States tries to say the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry is the most intense in sports.
