Brazilian Prostitutes Are Getting Ready for the World Cup by Learning English
Prostitution is legal in Brazil, as it is in many western nations. However, unlike some other countries, where certain laws have been enacted to keep prostitution very discreet and secretive, in Brazil the government almost encourages it by providing a number of helpful resources for prostitutes. For a while, the government even had a website that gave advice to their country’s prostitutes, like “become visually appealing” and “seduce with affectionate nicknames.”
So it should be no surprise that the prostitution industry is a well-oiled machine in Brazil. And with a couple of pretty major world sporting events on the horizon—World Cup 2014 and the 2016 Summer Olympics—the nation’s prostitutes are preparing for a boom in business by learning English.
No, really. In the city of Belo Horizonte, which will host six World Cup matches in 2014, the local Association of Prostitutes (yep, that’s a real thing) is organizing English courses. The president of the organization says 20 women have already signed up and that she’s expecting about 300 of the association’s 4,000 members to participate.
As she explained recently to the Toronto Star, “it will be important for the girls to be able to use English to let their clients know what they are charging and learn about what turns them on.”
So, you see, it’s really all about customer satisfaction.
