The Houston Rockets Mascot Got a Little Overzealous with the Old Cake Gag on Tuesday Night (Video)
One of the oldest gags in the sports mascot playbook is the “rag on an opposing fan” bit.
It takes many forms, of course, from things as minor as shooting said fan with silly string, to things as severe as ripping the opposing team’s jersey off the guy’s (or gal’s) back. However, one thing is almost always true: the “opposing fan” is actually a plant. After all, you can’t just go attacking a paying customer simply because they’re rooting for another team. That would be a recipe for lawsuits.
I mention this as a preface to the following video featuring the antics of the Houston Rockets’ mascot, Clutch. On Tuesday night, Clutch threw a cake in the face of a guy wearing a Lakers jersey in Houston. And like I said, that guy was obviously not just some random Lakers fan. It was all part of the act.
What was notable about this incident, however, was the ferocity with which Clutch hit the guy with the cake. The anthropomorphic plush bear didn’t just push the cake into the guy’s face. He slammed it in there at a pretty high speed that surely jammed a good dose of flour and sugar up into the dude’s sinuses.
See for yourself:
Ouch, man. Somebody in the front office might want to send a memo to Clutch, asking him to dial it down a notch the next time they do this bit. If not, he’s probably going to give someone whiplash.
