Stat Line of the Night — 1/13/2013 — Shane Vereen
When the New England Patriots and the Houston Texans met at Gillette Stadium during week 14 of this season, it was Tom Brady who emerged as the star of the show, throwing for 296 yards and four touchdowns during the Pats’ 41-14 victory. And while the Pro Bowl quarterback had another impressive showing against the Texans during yesterday’s Divisional Round Playoff match-up (344 yards, three touchdowns), it was somewhat overshadowed by the performance of his teammate, Shane Vereen.
The Patriots running back accumulated a total of just 400 yards and four touchdowns in a back-up roll throughout the course of the season, but on Sunday he appeared to be more of a focal point in the Pats’ offense, as he rushed the ball seven times for 41 yards and a touchdown to go along with five receptions for 83 yards and two touchdowns. Two of those touchdowns came in the opening half, helping New England jump out to a 17-3 lead, while his third touchdown in the fourth quarter would essentially seal the deal for the Patriots, as they rolled to the 41-28 victory.
With the win, the Patriots will now get ready for the Baltimore Ravens in what should be an entertaining rematch of last season’s AFC Conference Championship Game. And they’ll hope that Vereen has saved some of his magic for that contest. For now, he earns “The Stat Line of the Night” for Sunday, January 13, 2012.
