Alex Ovechkin Collides Hard with Teammate Marcus Johansson During Caps Scrimmage (Video)
Alex Ovechkin is know for (among other things) throwing monster hits. And while these hits are normally on purpose, at the Washington Capitals’ training camp on Tuesday we saw what it looks like when the “Great 8” collides with you accidentally.
The hit came in a scrimmage between the Caps and the Reading Royals of the ECHL at Washington’s practice facility outside DC. Ovechkin was playing together with his usual linemates, Nicklas Backstrom and Marcus Johansson, so you would think they’d have a pretty good idea of where everyone will be.
As Backstron was carrying the puck up the ice, Ovie and Johansson skated right into each other in front of the blue line. Fortunately, neither of them were seriously injured; however, they were pretty shaken up, and Ovechkin had to leave the ice to attend to a cut on his chin.

Now, in fairness, Ovechkin has recently switched from left wing to right wing in order to reduce his defensive responsibilities under the system being implemented by new head coach Adam Oates. However, this is the kind of thing that would normally get ironed out during the preseason, but the NHL won’t be having a preseason this year due to the extended lockout. So with real games starting this weekend, let’s just say things are going to be pretty interesting.
