Here’s a Preview of Manti Te’o’s Interview with a Skeptical Katie Couric (Video)
Yep, those were the golden days. This week the story is a lot less fun—because Manti Te’o and the other key figures in this story are now coming forward to talk to the press, ruining all the mystery and intrigue.
On Friday, the woman who supposedly was duped into providing the pictures of Lennay Kekua, Manti’s fake girlfriend, went on NBC’s Today and explained how Ronaiah Tuiasosopo got her to take them for his sick cousin. Now today we have snippets of the interview Katie Couric did with Manti and his family, which will air on Thursday. And in this interview—Manti’s first TV appearance since this story broke last week—Manti basically reiterates everything he told to ESPN’s Jeremy Schaap last week:
- he really did think Lennay Kekua was dead
- it wasn’t until December 6 that he knew something was fishy, but he wasn’t sure what
- he did lie about Lennay after he knew something was wrong
- he did it because he was confused and didn’t know what to do

I don’t know about you—and I never would have imagined saying this last week—but I think I believe the kid. Based on the fact that we now know more than one person helped perpetrate this hoax, the story Manti is telling is totally plausible. He spoke to a girl. He got pictures that he requested of her holding a sign with her initials. He spoke to her brother. And he lied because he had just found out for himself that he was duped and was embarrassed and didn’t know what to do.
I’m pretty sure that if I were in Manti’s shoes I’d do the same thing. Wouldn’t you?
