Stat Line of the Night — 1/23/2013 — Marian Gaborik

The New York Rangers entered the lockout-shortened 2013 NHL season with the highest of expectations after finishing atop the Eastern Conference standings last season and making it all the way to the Conference Finals before losing to the New Jersey Devils.  But despite those expectations, the Rangers kicked off the year with losses to the Bruins and the Penguins in each of their first two games.  They were looking to avoid making it three in a row to start the season when theytook on the Bruins once again last night (this time at Madison Square Gardens).  And thanks to a brilliant offensive performance from Marian Gaborik, the Rangers would finally get that elusive first win of the season, but it wasn’t easy.

Gaborik opened the scoring with two first period goals to give the Rangers the 2-0 lead, but after 60 minutes of play, the two teams found themselves tied 3-3.  As a result, the game went to overtime, and it was during the extra frame that Gaborik would pick off an errant pass in his own zone, take it the length of the ice and bat home his own rebound on a breakaway to give himself the hat-trick and his team the 4-3 overtime victory.

And to top things off, the Rangers’ winger also earns “The Stat Line of the Night” for Wednesday, January 23, 2013.
