Oscar Pistorius Charged with Murdering His Girlfriend
You know how you’ve read all those moving, inspirational stories about double-amputee Olympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius, and what a hero he is?
Yeah, well, never mind. All that stuff has been undone. The fact that this guy became the first double-amputee in history to compete in the Olympics against able-bodied athletes doesn’t really matter any more. Oscar Pistorius, “the Blade Runner,” has been arrested in South Africa for murdering his girlfriend.
Just before dawn on Thursday, February 14—Valentine’s Day—model Reeva Steenkamp was shot four times at Pistorius’s home in a gated community in the South African capital of Pretoria. Initially, some local media sources were reporting that Steenkamp may have been mistaken for a home intruder, and thus that the shooting may have been accidental. However, police have denied that these reports came from them.
Obviously, that is not a denial of the accidental shooting theory. However, police spokesperson Brigadier Denise Beukes also suggested other motives may have been at play by revealing that there had been previous “allegations of a domestic nature” at the home of Pistorius. “I’m not going to elaborate on it,” she explained,” but there have been incidents.”
Police responded to a call around 3 a.m. and recovered a 9 mm pistol at the scene. It’s unclear who called the police, but they have said that there are witnesses—”neighbors and people that heard things that happened earlier in the evening and when the shooting took place.”
After being questioned for hours, Pistorius was taken away by police, head down, hoodie up, as photographers snapped his picture. He will appear in court on charges of murder later today.
So much for the feel-good story of the 2012 Summer Olympics, huh?
