Chicago Wolves and Rockford IceHogs Engage in Epic St. Patty’s Day Hockey Brawl (Video)
You would expect the Chicago Wolves and Rockford IceHogs of the AHL to have a pretty fierce rivalry. For starters, the two teams play their home games about an hour and a half away from each other. On top of that, you have the fact that the IceHogs are the farm team for the beloved Chicago Blackhawks, while the Wolves are the farm team for the hated Vancouver Canucks. That’s just one big jumble of loyalties.
So are these teams in fact rivals? Well, judging by the wicked brawl that broke out yesterday between the two teams in Chicago, I’m going to say that’s a definite yes.
The fracas started when Chicago’s Guillaume Desbiens checked Rockford’s Ben Smith into the boards and Smith went flying through the open gate. Desbiens obviously landed on top of the IceHog winger, although it didn’t seem like he did anything particularly vicious.
But do you think Rockford’s Jeremy Morin cared if Desbiens really did anything particularly vicious or not? Nope. He just started wailing on Desbiens, and before you know it all hell broke loose.
The best part? While nobody actually left the bench—an act that would have resulted in big suspensions—that didn’t stop several of the Wolves players from getting involved. At the 0:09 mark you see two guys exchanging punches around the glass separating the benches, which I thought was a pretty novel solution. Then, at the 0:39 mark you see one Chicago player reaching out and poking a Rockford player with his stick.
All in all, it was one of the most memorable hockey brawls I’ve seen in a long time. Have a look:
