Marc Gasol Lost a Shoe, Picked It Up, and Used It to Swat the Ball Away from Derrick Favors (Video)
Well, here’s something you don’t see every day. Or, you know, ever.
On Saturday night, during the Jazz-Grizzlies game in Salt Lake City, Memphis center Marc Gasol lost a shoe in the offensive zone. Then he picked it up, carried it down the court to his defensive position, and used it to swat the ball away from Utah’s Derrick Favors.
It all started after Gasol scored a bucket in the paint. Favors accidentally stepped on the Spaniard’s heel and Gasol stepped right out of his sneaker. For some reason, Gasol was really annoyed by this. Maybe he thought Favors did it on purpose, or maybe he thought the referees should have delayed the inbound pass until he got his shoe back on. But it’s clear Gasol was annoyed, because when Favors got the ball underneath the basket, he took a big swipe at the guy with his shoe.
Fans of course wanted a technical or a flagrant or something, but the referees just called a regular old foul. And why not? Where does it say in the NBA rulebook that you are not allowed to swat the ball with your shoes?
In any case, it was all pretty weird. I guess we’ll have to start calling this guy “Shoeless Marc Gasol.” Have a look:
I don’t know about you, but the first thing that popped into my head when I saw this was…
…Because seriously, who throws a shoe?
