Stat Line of the Night — 3/21/2013 — Derrick Nix
After putting together a 13-5 conference record and finishing in third in the competitive Big Ten, the Michigan State Spartans entered the NCAA Tournament with a #3 ranking and a spot in the Final Four in mind. But before taking on some of the bigger dogs in the Midwest portion of the bracket, like Louisville and Duke, they would have to get by the 14th-ranked Valparaiso Crusaders.
Beating the Horizon League champions would be no easy task for the Spartans, but they did get the job done thanks in large part to the play of forward Derrick Nix. Playing in his fourth career NCAA Tournament, the senior’s experience showed, as he led the way with 23 points, 15 rebounds, one assist and two steals during the Spartans’ 65-54 victory.
With the win, Michigan State goes on to play a tough Memphis team with a spot in the Sweet 16 on the line. A win would give Nix his third Sweet 16 appearance in four years with the Spartans, but for now he earns “The Stat Line of the Night” for Thursday, March 21, 2013.
