Sandy Koufax Throws Out Opening Pitch at Dodger Stadium…In Relief of Magic Johnson (Video)
I’ve seen a lot of ceremonial first pitches in my day, including not one but two by a guy who doesn’t even have arms. Nevertheless, the one from yesterday’s Opening Day tilt between the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants at Dodger Stadium is already one of my favorites.
You see, the Dodgers pulled a fast one on the 53,138 fans in attendance. It looked like minority team owner Magic Johnson was going to be throwing out the first pitch. Then, right before Magic’s windup, Dodgers manager Don Mattingly popped out of the dugout and signaled to the bullpen for a reliever. (Talk about a quick hook.) The guy who came out and took the ball? None other than Dodgers legend Sandy Koufax, one of the greatest pitchers in the history of baseball.
Was it corny? Sure it was. But for Dodgers fans or anyone with an appreciation for the history of the game, it was still pretty fun to see the 77-year-old Hall of Famer on the mound at Dodger Stadium again.
