This Day In Sports History (May 6th) — Hartford Whalers

It was on this day in 1997 that Hartford Whalers owner Peter Karmanos officially announced that the team would be relocated to Raleigh, North Carolina, and be known as the Carolina Hurricanes.

Karmanos was frustrated with the team’s poor attendance figures as well as a lack of corporate support, which prompted the move to North Carolina.  Also, Karmanos’ efforts to build a new arena seemed to be going well but hit a snag when he demanded to be reimbursed up to $45 million in losses during the three years the new arena was to be built, and Connecticut Governor John G. Rowland and the state were not impressed by his demand.

Here is the final goal in Hartford Whalers history.
