After Game-Winning Hit, the Royals’ Eric Hosmer Takes Traditional KC BBQ Sauce Pie to the Face (Video)

Normally when a pro ballplayer gets the big hit that wins the game for his team, he gets either a bucket of gatorade dumped on his head or a shaving cream pie stuffed in his face. However, the Kansas City Royals do things a little differently. Apparently they’ve decided to give their victory tradition more of a local flavor. And since nothing says “Kansas City” like thick, sweet, smokey barbecue sauce…well, you see where I’m going with this, right?

Yesterday afternoon at Kauffman Stadium, Lorenzo Cain hit a game-tying two run homer off Detroit Tigers closer Jose Valverde with two outs in the bottom of the 9th, and when he got back to the dugout, he took time for a celebratory pose with a bottle of KC barbecue sauce. Then, when Eric Hosmer won the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th, the bottle was opened and Hosmer got a BBQ sauce pie to the face.

Take a look:

Fortunately, KC-style barbecue sauce is more sweet than spicy, or else Hosmer might be suffering from some blurred vision today.

In any case, I guess when a team hasn’t been to the postseason since 1985, they figure, hey, we might as well mix things up a bit.
