Rays’ Alex Cobb Hit in Head by Line Drive (Video)
Earlier this season it was Toronto’s J.A. Happ. Last year it was Oakland’s Brandon McCarthy, Houston’s Mickey Storey, and Detroit’s Doug Fister. Now the latest pitcher to join the “clocked in the head by a line drive club” is Tampa Bay’s Alex Cobb.
On Saturday afternoon during a game against the Kansas City Royals at the Trop, Cobb was hit in the ear by a line drive off the bat of Eric Hosmer. The guy managed to remain conscious and responsive afterward, but the sight of him being hit and then being taken away on a stretcher was still pretty terrifying.
Take a look:
Fortunately for Cobb, this incident wound up being less serious than that of McCarthy and Happ. Both of those guys suffered skull fractures, and poor McCarthy had a life-threatening brain contusion and epidural hemorrhage. The Rays pitcher, however, was released from the hospital on Sunday with a concussion and nothing more.
Of course, concussions are serious injuries and the resulting headaches are no picnic. But all in all, you can bet Alex Cobb is feeling pretty lucky to be on the seven-day concussion list and not the 30 day DL.
