Carly Rae Jepsen Throws One of the Worst Ceremonial First Pitches of All-Time (Video)
When talking about the worst ceremonial first pitches of all-time, there are definitely a lot of examples to choose from. However, comparing them really is a case of apples and oranges.
For example, you can’t just compare a first pitch thrown out by a pro athlete to a first pitch thrown out by a pop singer. We have considerably different expectations in each case. When the Jacksonville Jaguars’ Denard Robinson totally bombed while throwing out the first pitch in Detroit, you couldn’t really compare that to the awful first pitch of Korean pop star Jessica Jung last year. One makes millions of dollars playing football, while the other makes millions of dollars giggling and singing songs.
Instead, you have to compare like to like. We can only judge the awfulness of Robinson’s first pitch by comparing it to the first pitch of another athlete (like John Wall, for example). And you can only judge the awfulness of Jung’s first pitch by comparing it to the first pitch of another pop singer.
Enter Carly Rae Jepsen. Yesterday the Canadian pop singer threw out the first pitch at Tropicana Field prior to the Rays-Astros game, at it was absolutely terrible.
Take a look:
Hey, I just met you. And this is crazy. But here’s my first pitch. So catch it maybe.
Seriously, though, while Jepsen’s pitch was bad, you have to give her credit for having the gumption (which is an old-fashioned word for “balls”) to try a regulation-length pitch from atop the pitchers mound. Jessica Jung was about 10 feet in front of the rubber when she threw her pitch.
Better luck next time, Carly…if there ever is a next time.
