Luke Donald Gets the Luckiest Bounce You’ll Ever See at the 2013 British Open
Muirfield wasn’t too kind to England’s Luke Donald on day one of the 2013 British Open. Although the guy didn’t end up breaking any clubs or anything, he did shoot a nine-over 80, which means that, barring one of the greatest comebacks in the history of golf, he is still going to be one of the best golfers never to win a major when Monday rolls around.
The crazy thing, though, is that his first round could have been even worse. On the ninth hole yesterday, Donald found himself in the thick rough while lining up his approach shot, and like so many others, the tall grass just ate him up. His shot went almost a full 30 degrees off target, and instead of landing anywhere near the green, it headed out of bounds.
Then something incredible happened: the ball hit a stone wall and caromed about 20 yards back into the middle of the fairway. It saved him at least one stroke, and maybe more.
Take a look:
You can’t exactly say it was Donald’s lucky day yesterday, given the way his round went overall. But it definitely was his lucky moment. You don’t get that kind of bounce too often.
