Goalie Fail! Chelsea Backup Keeper Provides Peter Cech With Some Serious Job Security (Video)
I guess when there is absolutely no chance of becoming your team’s number one goalie, you just mentally check out sometimes.
You can ask Chelsea backup Mark Schwarzer about it. The former Fulham keeper joined Chelsea as a free agent this summer, knowing full well that, barring injury or blowout, he won’t get a lick of playing time this year because he plays behind one of the world’s best, Petr Cech. And while I really hope my theory is incorrect for his sake, in a recent preseason friendly against A.S. Roma, Schwarzer certainly wasn’t at the top of his game.
With Roma putting very mild pressure on Chelsea, Schwarzer’s defense passed the ball back to him. Unfortunately, the ball bounced right through him, hit the goal post, ricocheted out, and was hammered home by Roma’s Erik Lamela.
See for yourself:
That. Was. Brutal.
Being a backup is not an enviable task…and this is why.
