Canucks Fans Wrote an Inspirational Song to Cheer Up Roberto Luongo (Video)

If the NHL ever decides to hand out an award for the classiest handling of a really sh*tty situation, they should probably name it after Vancouver Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo.

You see, somewhere in between winning the William M. Jennings Trophy, getting his team to the Stanley Cup Finals, and winning an Olympic gold medal for Team Canada, old Bobby Lou developed a reputation for choking.

Was it fair? Not really. Basically the guy just had a few bad games during the playoffs in 2010, 2011, and 2012. But that was enough to somehow overshadow the fact that he is obviously one of the best goalies in the NHL. And for that reason, during the 2012 playoffs, Canucks GM Mike Gillis decided that Cory Schneider would be Vancouver’s number one guy, and they’d set about trading Luongo in the offseason.

A sad breakup? Sure. But hey, at least there would be closure and everybody could move on.

Of course, the only problem was that Gillis never traded Luongo. Sure, there were offers, but for some reason Gillis was expecting a whole line of hot young prospects for his 33-year-old goalie with the 10-year, $64 million contract, so he turned every offer down. Thus, when the 2013 season began, you had Schneider in goal and a dejected Luongo backing him up on the bench.

But did Luongo lash out in the media? Did he tank on purpose? Nope. He put on a brave face and tried his best.

Then, right after the 2012 season, when everyone assumed Luongo would finally be traded, Gillis shocked everyone by trading Cory Schneider. The assumption, now, is that Vancouver is going to go with Luongo after all. But of course, there is one little problem: they may have shattered the guy’s confidence and will to play in Vancouver.

Fortunately, Puck Daddy writer Harrison Mooeny and a bunch of other Canucks bloggers came up with a solution to boost Bobby Lou’s spirits: an inspirational song.

The video is truly moving, and features a very special guest:

If that doesn’t get Luongo pumped for another season as a Canuck, nothing will.
