Francesca Schiavone Needed a Hug During Her Loss to Serena Williams at the US Open (GIF)
Italian tennis player Francesca Schiavone isn’t just some nobody on the WTA Tour. Though she’s currently ranked no. 55 in the world, back in January of 2011 she was ranked no. 4, and in May of 2010 she won the French Open. So when the 33-year-old finally hangs up the tennis shoes for good, she can be pretty proud of her career.
That being said, Schiavone is obviously no Serena Williams. So when the Italian veteran found out she drew the no. 1 player in the world in the first round of the 2013 U.S. Open, one would have to imagine she let out quite a groan…or at least did that thing Italians do where they put their hands flat together and move them up and down like they are pretend praying.
But hey, there’s always a chance, right? You never know what can happen…
Well, sometimes. But in this case, no. Serena absolutely obliterated Schiavone in Round One by scores of 6-0 and 6-1. And apparently things were so hopeless for Schiavone that, dammit, she just needed a hug. So she went and got herself one. From a ball boy.
Take a look:
I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before. Then again, I certainly don’t blame her.
