Is Sean Avery Gay?

Sean Avery was one of the NHL’s most notorious agitators from his debut in 1999 to his retirement in 2012. As such, he was also one of the most reviled players in the league among both fans and players. However, this reputation as a scumbag on the ice, combined with his very unorthodox interests off the ice—unorthodox for a hockey player, that is—also made him one of the most interesting professional athletes of the modern era.

What are Sean Avery’s interests off the ice, you ask? Well, for starters, he’s been a vocal supporter of same-sex marriage and LGBT rights. And that’s probably a good thing, given that his keen interest is fashion.

You see, Avery doesn’t just like clothes. He likes designing them. And not just men’s clothes, but women’s clothes as well. He spent one summer as an intern at Vogue, has guest edited, and even served as a judge on Project Runway.

So why do I bring all this up? Because it is the context for the rumors flying around on the internet about Sean Avery this week—namely, that Avery is gay…and engaged…to the Executive Vice President of Bravo, Andy Cohen.

It’s no secret that Avery and Cohen have been friends for years. However, this rumor, apparently started by gossip blog The Fame Driven, is pretty bold.

Here’s what their “source” had to say:

“I’m not sure if you are aware or not but Andy Cohen has been dating former NHL star Sean Avery for almost a year and a half now, it will be two years in March. And get this, they are secretly ENGAGED! There have been rumors for years in the NHL league about Sean Avery’s sexuality, but he has always vehemently denied it, Sean even went as far as to “date” a beard girlfriend (Elisha Cuthbert), who he was never even remotely into, to cover up him receiving backlash from his NHL teammates and internally in the NHL for being gay.”

And here is The Fame Driven’s supposed photographic evidence:

Yes, there have been suspicions about Sean Avery for a long time, given his interests. However, one would have thought that, if Avery were gay and didn’t want people to know, he wouldn’t have been so open about his love of fashion and political support for gay rights. So it would be kind of surprising to learn that Avery is gay now, after all these years.

Also, there is the whole Elisha Cuthbert thing.

In any case, Avery and Cohen don’t seem to be in any hurry to confirm or deny the rumors, which means that, whatever the truth is, they’re both comfortable with it.
