Ndamukong Suh Already Facing NFL Discipline for Dirty Hit (GIF)
Well, that didn’t take long.
Detroit Lions All-Pro defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh has a reputation as one of the dirtiest players in the NFL, and he’s already living up to it just one game into the 2013 season.
According to a league source who spoke with ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, the league is taking a long look at Suh’s block on Vikings center John Sullivan from Sunday’s game at Ford Field.
While Lions teammate DeAndre Levy was returning an interception for an apparent touchdown, Suh decided to take Sullivan out by diving at his knees. This tactic, of course, is a big no no, and the refs got the call right. The illegal block gave the Lions a 15-yard penalty and nullified the touchdown.
Suh denies any intent to harm, as you would expect. “I wasn’t by any means going for the knees,” he explained. “[Sullivan] knows that. We had a great conversation running out at halftime, and he understood. My aim was his waist to cut him off.”
Is Suh telling the truth? Maybe. But that’s the problem with reputations—they tend to make people assume the worst. And we’ll know pretty soon if Suh’s reputation made league officials assume the worst.
In any case, here’s the hit in question so you can judge for yourself:
