Thermal Cameras Make Formula One Crashes Even More Awesome Than They Already Are (Video)
Formula One race teams use the most advanced technology to keep cars running at ridiculous speeds without flying off the track. In fact, it’s this technological sophistication that makes F1 the greatest auto racing series in the world (sorry, NASCAR fans).
However, it turns out that the technology F1 teams use to get maximum performance also makes even the tamest crashes really, really awesome. So, you know, it’s kind of a win-win.
Over the weekend at the Italian Grand Prix, Paul di Resta of the Sahara Force India F1 Team was driving with a thermal camera on his Force India-Mercedes when he got tangled up with another driver. The purpose of the thermal camera, of coruse, is to monitor the termperature of tires and engines and guage their performance. However, the bonus of mounting a thermal camera is that it turns a crash that didn’t look all that impressive on television into gripping footage.
Have a look:
Yep, that’s pretty awesome. Let’s hope they start showing live thermal camera feeds a lot more.
