Clemson’s Isaiah Battle Lays a Nasty Sucker Punch on NC State’s Jarvis Byrd (GIF)

Last night Tajh Boyd and the #3 Clemson Tigers struggled to get their offense going against the unranked NC State Wolfpack. However, they eventually built up enough steam to take a 26-7 lead early in the fourth quarter, so the game was never really in jeopardy.

Of course, you might not know it from the behavior of Clemson left tackle Isaiah Battle. He was apparently feeling a lot of pressure last night and, when he found himself face-to-face with a couple of NC State defenders, he decided to just release all that tension with a sudden and very unexpected sucker punch.

The victim of Battle’s aggression was Wolfpack defensive back Jarvis Byrd. It didn’t seem as though he was seriously injured, but he was definitely caught by surprise and knocked on his can.

You’ve got to be a pretty precise puncher to lay one on a guy’s chin underneath the face mask without breaking your hand. Is Clemson practicing this or something?

In any case, Battle was taken out of the game right after that uppercut by Clemson coach Dabo Swinney, then ejected altogether by the refs. Chances are he’ll also be facing some further form of discipline, too, because the NCAA kind of frowns upon players punching each other.
