Orioles Third Baseman Manny Machado Goes Down with Nasty Knee Injury (Video & GIF)
This year the Baltimore Orioles won’t be playing in the postseason. However, in many ways, this season was actually better than last, and their fans actually have more reasons to be hopeful for the future.
Last year the O’s earned a Wild Card and beat the Rangers, then took the Yankees to five games in the Division Series, but they really were more lucky than good, finishing with just a +7 run differential. On the other hand, this season’s O’s will not win 90 games, but their run differential is a healthier +39, and they’ve seen two genuine superstars emerge in slugger Chris Davis and defensive wizard Manny Machado. So despite missing the postseason, Baltimore fans have a lot to look forward to next year and beyond.
Of course, it’s this promising future that also makes what happened on Monday night in Tampa Bay all the more gut-wrenching.
While running out an infield single, All-Star third baseman Manny Machado landed awkwardly on the first base bag, causing his left knee to buckle inward. The 21-year-old future gold-glove winner immediately crumpled to the ground and grabbed his knee while trainers and staff ran out to help him. He remained on the ground for seven minutes while fans, teammates and opponents looked on, before eventually being taken off the field on a stretcher.
Here’s the video of the uncomfortable scene:
And here’s the GIF:
They took x-rays at the park and today Machado will get an MRI back in Baltimore to determine the severity of the injury. But obviously, it doesn’t look good. Machado almost certainly faces a long and tedious rehabilitation.
Sorry, Baltimore. Go Ravens?
