Adrian Peterson’s Son Dies: Beaten Unconscious by Mother’s Boyfriend At The Age Of 2
Update 7:00 PM ET
Just after 5:00 PM ET today, police in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, confirmed that the two-year-old son of Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has died from injuries sustained Wednesday.
Earlier it had been reported that the family intended to take the child off life support today. Police have not identified the boy out of respect for the family, and there was some speculation as to his true relation to Peterson. However, it has since been confirmed by Peterson’s own father that a recent paternity test had determined that the boy was, in fact, Peterson’s son.
Joseph Patterson, 27, who was dating the boy’s mother, has been charged with aggravated assault on an infant. He had previously been convicted in a domestic abuse case involving his own three-year-old son and his mother in June of 2012. However, the one-year jail sentence handed down was suspended on the condition that he seek counseling.
Now Patterson is in jail on $750,000 cash bond.
On Friday, Peterson returned to Vikings practice facilities, and he has said that he intends to play on Sunday. However, that remains to be seen. For now, all he has said publicly has come via Twitter.
It seems as though Peterson had not yet gotten a chance to get to know his son. Unfortunately, now he never will. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Peterson and the rest of the boy’s family.
On Thursday, reigning NFL MVP Adrian Peterson left the Minnesota Vikings practice facility for “personal reasons” that were later described as “tragic” in nature and involving a family member. Today, according to reports from TMZ and several other sources, we’ve learned what those “personal reasons” are: Peterson’s two-year-old son was beaten unconscious by his mother’s current boyfriend.
According to local law enforcement officials, emergency medial responders arrived at the apartment where the boy lives with his mother at 5:45 PM on Wednesday and found the child unresponsive. He was then rushed to a nearby hospital, where it was determined that his severe head injuries were consistent with abuse. This then led to the arrest of a 27-year-old man named Joseph Patterson.
Sources have said that the boy in serious condition right now is not Adrian Peterson Jr., who was photographed being ridiculously adorable (above) at the Vikings training camp earlier this summer. So it would seem right now that the injured infant is in fact a son few people knew Adrian Peterson had.
But, of course, the identity of the boy and his relation to Adrian Peterson doesn’t really matter. This story is absolutely sickening. Let’s all pray that the child survives, and that Patterson, if guilty, receives the maximum penalty under the law—and, once in prison, maybe a little something extra.
