Colts’ Hugh Thornton Delivers Costly Late Hit (GIF)
With the Indianapolis Colts trailing the San Diego Chargers by a score of 16-9 late in the fourth quarter, Andrew Luck and the Colts offense were set up with 1st & 10 at their own nine-yard line. They needed to drive the length of the field and score a touchdown in order to tie the game and give themselves a shot at earning their fourth straight victory.
Instead, they found themselves moving backwards after this incredibly late hit by offensive guard Hugh Thornton on Chargers defensive end Corey Liuget following a drop by Colts running back Trent Richardson. The play resulted in an unnecessary roughness penalty, which sent the Colts back to their own five-yard line.

Three plays later the Colts were in a 4th & 2 situation, and thus, were forced to punt the ball away from their own 17-yard line. The Chargers would go on to record a field-goal, en route to the 19-9 victory.
So, yeah, that late hit was pretty costly for the Colts. Way to go, Hugh Thornton.
