Yasiel Puig Hits a Triple, Flips His Bat During Game 3 of the NLCS (GIFs)
As soon as the Dodgers brought him up from the minors back in June, it was apparent that Yasiel Puig was going to be one of the most exciting, electric and entertaining players in Major League Baseball. That’s not to say he’s always one of the best (though he is sometimes) or that he isn’t also infuriating. But at times you just can’t help but smile and shake your head.
Last night was one of those times.
During the bottom of the 4th inning in Game 3 of the NLCS between the Dodgers and Cardinals, with Adrian Gonzalez on second base and one run already across the plate, Puig added another by ripping a triple off St. Louis ace Adam Wainwright. Of course, Puig didn’t think it was a triple. He thought, right off the bat, that it was a home run. So he flipped his bat like a boss and sauntered out of the box:
That premature celebration wasn’t quite as bad as this one…or this one. But it was still a silly thing for a professional to do. Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said it best during his between-innings interview with the TBS broadcast crew: “Yasiel does his thing. I guess he thought it was way gone.”
So yeah, that’s the maddening side of Puig. But then there’s the side that makes you smile—the part that, after realizing the ball is not leaving the park, turns on the jets and still gets a standup triple…then celebrates like this:
What can I say? If nothing else, the guy is enthusiastic and it rubs off on everyone around him.
Oh, and by the way, the Dodgers went on to win 3-0 and now trail the Cards 2-1 in their best-of-seven series.
