Here’s the Blow that Earned Cain Velasquez the Victory Over Junior dos Santos at UFC 166 (GIF)
Cain Velasquez came into UFC 166 as the decided favorite to retain the heavyweight title against Junior dos Santos. However, it wasn’t a sure thing. Velasquez may have been 12-1 in the UFC, but that one loss came at the hands of dos Santos back in November of 2011 in the first of their two previous meetings. So everyone knew, in theory, that dos Santos could win.
Of course, he didn’t. The fight went pretty much as all the prognosticators expected, with Velasquez dominating and ultimately using the skills he honed as a collegiate wrestler to finish off his opponent.
Officially the bout was scored a victory by TKO in the fifth round. But the blow that precipitated the referee calling the fight was a wrestling-style take down that smashed Junior’s head on the mat. Hard.
Take a look:
Yep, dos Santos was definitely seeing little birdies flying around his head after that. He and everybody else knew it was over right then and there.
