Gregg Popovich Went All Allen Iverson on Craig Sager Last Night (Videos)

If San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich isn’t the best coach in the NBA, he’s certainly in the top three. Under his leadership the Spurs have turned into the NBA’s model franchise, winning championships in 1999, 2003, 2005, and 2007, while almost winning another last year, having taken the Heat to seven games.

However, Popovich isn’t just a good coach. He’s an entertaining personality who doesn’t take bull from anybody. Last year he wanted to rest his star players even though the Spurs were taking on the Heat on national television. Do you think he gave a crap what TNT or the NBA thought about that? Nope. He did it anyway. The guy does what he thinks is best, and he doesn’t beat around the bush.

And that brings us to the interview he did with Craig Sager last night on TNT. Coach Popovich had a full-on Allen Iverson moment in which he expressed his utter disbelief that he had to give an on-court interview for a PRESEASON game.

Take a look:

The way Pop repeats “PRESEASON?” over and over obviously calls to mind the famous interview Iverson gave in 2002, in which he did the same thing with “PRACTICE?”  In fact, it wouldn’t be surprising if Popovich did it on purpose.

Here’s the Iverson press conference so you can compare:
