Belligerent Hockey Fan Brutally Attacks Beloved Mascot…Really (Video)

marty the marmot mascot attacked by fan

This year, Marty the Marmot, mascot of the Victoria (British Columbia) Royals of the Western Hockey League, was officially named “Favorite Mascot of the Year” by, defeating such world famous mascots as Benny the Bull (Chicago Bulls) and the Sausages (Milwaukee Brewers) in the final round of voting. So that should tell you how much the good people of Victoria love their anthropomorphic marmot buddy.

Unfortunately, it seems not everyone in Victoria is crazy about Marty, because on Saturday night the poor guy was brutally attacked by an extremely sore loser during one of the intermission contests.

Marty, you see, was “officiating” a game of musical chairs between a few lucky fans at center ice. But when he playfully kicked one of the inflatable chairs away from a male contestant to aid a female contestant—which is pretty typical mascot behavior—the guy responded by performing a body slam tackle on the ice, before dragging Marty away by his furry feet.

It was kinda nuts. Take a look:

Luckily, Marty is going to be okay. Hopefully the courts mandate that the guy in green get some anger management counselling, though, because seriously, who does that?
