Rams Rookie Tavon Austin Had a Pretty Ridiculous Day (GIFs)
Unless you live in Indianapolis or St. Louis, you probably weren’t watching Sunday’s game between the Colts and Rams. It wasn’t exactly one of the week’s marquee match ups. The Colts are missing Reggie Wayne, but they still have Andrew Luck, and thus were supposed to walk all over the Sam Bradford-less Rams.
You were probably surprised, therefore, when you checked your phone and saw the Rams leading 35-0 at one point en route to a 38-8 victory.
How’d they do it, you ask? Simple. Tavon Austin.
After linemen were chosen with the first seven picks of the 2013 draft, the Rams used their eighth overall pick on the small but speedy wide receiver and punt return specialist from West Virginia. Until this week, the kid was known more for his epic flop than his game-changing talent—but not any more.
On Sunday against the Colts, Austin had 314 all-purpose yards. And 236 of those yards came on just three plays.
The first was a 98-yard punt return for a touchdown in the second quarter:
The second came just four minutes later, when Austin caught a pass from Kellen Clemens and turned it into a 57-yard touchdown:
And then, for the icing on the cake, Austin opened the third quarter with an 81-yard strike:
In fairness, you have to give a lot of the credit for the 57-yarder to Clemens. But Austin gets the rest.
Looks like he had a pretty good day, don’t you think?
