Here’s the Hit that Obliterated Gronk’s Knee—and Possibly the Patriots’ Season (GIF)
Well, so much for the Patriots’ Super Bowl chances this year.
We learned in Week 12 that they were capable of beating Peyton Manning and the Broncos, and with all due respect to the Chiefs, everyone already knew the AFC Championship was Denver’s to lose. So Pats fans had reason to hope for another Super Bowl berth.
Then on Sunday, during yet another Patriots comeback victory, tight end Rob Gronkowski had his knee absolutely destroyed by Cleveland’s T.J. Ward.
Take a look if you dare:
See ya later, ligaments!
Seriously, though, it was announced today that Gronk tore his ACL and MCL, which means he’s not going to be playing any more football for another 12 months or so.
The Patriots are obviously talking about how they’ll have to find other ways to win and have other guys take on different roles and contribute. But if there was an easy way to do that, they wouldn’t have given Gronk a $54 million contract extension that came with an $8 million signing bonus and $18.7 million in guaranteed money.
So good luck, Tom Brady. You’re going to need it.
